The European car market declined by 1.6% to 14,481,545 new passenger car registrations in 2009, compared to 14,717,358 in 2008. Car scrapping incentives in especially Germany, France, and the United Kingdom prevented what would have otherwise been a dismal year for new car sales in Europe. As a result of the ending of car scrapping incentives, 2010 is expected to be a very bad year for car sales in Europe.
Although Volkswagen did well in Europe in 2009 by increasing both market share and number of cars sold, other German brands and manufacturers suffered with mostly double digit losses. Troubled Swedish car manufacturer Saab saw sales decline by 59.1% while Volvo lost 9.3%.
Manufacturers of cheaper car brands did generally better. The best performers in Europe in 2009 were Renault’s budget Dacia brand (+29.2%) and Hyundai (+26.6).
The VW Golf, the top seller in Germany in 2009, was again the best-selling car model in Europe in 2009 followed by the Ford Fiesta.
Note:
Europe is defined by ACEA for statistical purposes as the European Union (EU) and EFTA (Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland) but excluding the small Malta and Cyprus markets.
